are you a "bad at project management" freelancer?

Why project management still feels "optional"

I remember it vividly... I usually do when someone gives me a dose of brutal honesty.

Personally I appreciate those uncomfy moments.

Very few people are brave enough to say what needs to be said, and tell the truth even when its hard to hear.

I was at a friends house with puppy Denver, and every noise he heard (or didn't hear), he barked... and their enormously tall ceilings echoed that bark...

... and now my sleep-deprived friend's sleeping children were at risk of no longer being asleep.

I was STRESSED. I didn't know what to do except hold his mouth shut (which works well, btw).

"Are you not doing any training with him?" another girl there asked me, to which I said, "I've tried to figure some stuff out but I'm just not good at it"

She then said, without a hint of irony or malice, "No one is naturally good at dog training. You have to care enough to learn"

I felt embarrassed, I felt shame, but I knew she was right.

It took me YEARS of showing up every day, constantly seeking out new information, and caring enough to try, to FINALLY feel like yeah, I AM GOOD with my dog now.

I hear it all the time with freelancing, too...

"I'm not good at project management..."

"My brain doesn't work that way"

"I'm a creative"

Like dog training, everything unknown is gonna be a bit daunting at first.

But you don't need a PMP certificate to BE in control.

In fact, you're exactly where you should be to accelerate the whole process ๐Ÿ˜‰ (thanks for being on my mailing list btw)

What you NEED first is to BUY IN to the value so you CARE enough to *push past* the resistance:

Like how detailed project plans become a daily & weekly roadmap that keeps multiple clients moving forward with FOCUS and ease.

Or how taking the time to update inaccurate project steps, as you're realizing you do it differently, is the path to BEING more efficient and working LESS.

That GUESSING how long each step will take (even when you aren't sure), tracking time, and then updating it to match how long it actually took eventually equates to MORE money per hour.

And how in the end, you have a collection of super accurate project templates you can use to pitch EASILY and actually get PAID what you deserve.

Until you can assign REAL meaning to project management...

It will always feel like something that's just adding on to your workload... when that's about as far from the truth as it gets.

BUT not everyone's brain works in a linear way so all kinds of resistance can come up.

I'm curious... does the topic of project management make you wanna run away or lean in? No judgement! I hated dog training until it started feeling fun. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ
