"I like to text, not email" < Client dream or nightmare?

Lessons from the *mistakes*
that cost money 🥲

I just wrapped a project that went absolutely SIDEWAYS.

The first one to do that in a while...

So much back and forth, chasing answers, calls attempting to be made on weekends and evenings (aka my biggest bugaboo)

There are so many different types of clients

And they all need to be managed a little differently.

I have a newer client thats come to me after I sold out an event he was part of at the end of 2024. 🥳

It's a pretty sweet gig bc this guy is the real deal... but his online presence is not.

Best case scenario really.

The only thing thats not best case is how differently he collaborates.

He doesn't use Google Docs, he's not great at replying to emails, but he likes phone calls and text messages. (also my bugaboo...seriously, reply to this email if you agree so I don't feel like a complete nutter 🤪)

We just finished the second phase of a broader project I mapped out, and it all went to shit bc I missed something super fucking important.

Side note: mistakes that cost money are the ones you don't make more than once.

I didn't think about hitting a paywall in the software I planned to use for the welcome email sequence. (F you HubSpot...)

After I already created the landing page and an email template 😮‍💨

In the end, I could only recommend ditching the expensive software and migrating everything to a different software they already had.

But it meant redoing everything I already did

MAN OH MAN...

Learning brand new landing page builders is time consuming bc they're all so different. (Seriously Kajabi, what the hell is that custom font process?!?!?!)

I ended up going 5ish hours over scope.

^ The "ish" is exactly why I don't like texting and random phone calls. It doesn't get tracked but that shit adds up.

But I still walked away with making a 3-figure hourly rate.

It wasn't my target rate, but I'm more than happy with it... and I won't forget to include analysis time for that going forward.

Creating prices *gets easier* all the time with these types of learnings 👆🏻

Missed steps and a couple hours over scope is just data for improving the process and the price next time.

If you struggle with charging higher amounts...

You will feel more justified when you know exactly why you need that time and how much it takes to do a good job.

It's shifting your mindset from "what a shit show" when things go off track, to analyzing the process analysis and making improvements going forward.

This is where ClickUp really shines for freelancing 😎

Rejection is a real "B" with an itch Waving at someone who doesn't wave back... the worst. Posting on LinkedIn to crickets? Hold me, please. Singing songs on a stage in front of hundreds, for 1 of 5 chances to play at a massive folk festival in Ontario–and not making it? It took me a solid week to like music again. Remember that email I sent last week about sensing a client's about to fire you? Well, it happened. "Due to some shifting priorities, we are bringing on a new paid advertising...

What to do when there's nothing you can do 🥲 You have a great retainer. You don’t want to lose it. But the account has been… challenging. Not because there’s too much to do. The opposite, actually. I’ve been working with this client for—pause while I realize the one-year mark was last month and I completely missed it. 🫠 And for basically the entire time, I’ve been desperately trying to crack the code of working together. One of the hardest parts about being a freelancer? You’re always on the...

Getting paid to *sit in a chair* is modern-day torture 🫠 One of the weirdest parts about being your own boss... is undoing the 9-5 conditioning. My first "real job" as a uni student was in the office at the Quaker Oats factory my dad worked at. I would wear the button-up shirts and black dress pants, traipse over the aluminum walkway into the plant, and log on to my Windows 95 desktop computer every SINGLE Monday to Friday. ... And have literally NOTHING to do. This was clearly one of those...
