Rejection is a real "B" with an itchWaving at someone who doesn't wave back... the worst. Posting on LinkedIn to crickets? Hold me, please. Singing songs on a stage in front of hundreds, for 1 of 5 chances to play at a massive folk festival in Ontario–and not making it? It took me a solid week to like music again. Remember that email I sent last week about sensing a client's about to fire you? Well, it happened.
"Due to some shifting priorities, we are bringing on a new paid advertising agency and will need to reallocate our organic social budget to make that possible, which unfortunately means we will need to end our current engagement soon. This isn’t at all a reflection of your work, it’s purely a change in direction given our need to drive immediate pipeline."
Cue the devastation... even though I've been hating working with them, and I procrastinate like HELL every single time I have to work on their account. Rejection stings.I'm sharing this with you for two reasons.
What I think is important is HOW we can change perspective on rejection when it happens: The first is to be so organized and care so much and try so hard with every single client that no part of you questions whether it was your fault when it comes to an end. Some clients just DON'T FIT and that's FINE. The second is to see it as an opportunity... now there's time and space for something new. Everything happens for a reason–even rejection. But in the spirit of being unapologetically organized... Here is a simple *Client Traitor* Tip:Do not DELETE their shit...! ARCHIVE instead. Archiving means you can always come back to it down the road when the client asks for something, or comes crawling back. To access all of your archived spaces, folders, lists, and tasks, select the 3 dots beside Spaces in the sidebar, and select Show Archived. What to do when there's nothing you can do 🥲 You have a great retainer. You don’t want to lose it. But the account has been… challenging. Not because there’s too much to do. The opposite, actually. I’ve been working with this client for—pause while I realize the one-year mark was last month and I completely missed it. 🫠 And for basically the entire time, I’ve been desperately trying to crack the code of working together. One of the hardest parts about being a freelancer? You’re always on the...
Getting paid to *sit in a chair* is modern-day torture 🫠 One of the weirdest parts about being your own boss... is undoing the 9-5 conditioning. My first "real job" as a uni student was in the office at the Quaker Oats factory my dad worked at. I would wear the button-up shirts and black dress pants, traipse over the aluminum walkway into the plant, and log on to my Windows 95 desktop computer every SINGLE Monday to Friday. ... And have literally NOTHING to do. This was clearly one of those...
Food, water, shelter, sleep... & *creativity*? 🤔 Why isn't creativity considered essential to survival? So many people are unhappy these days. The daily grind sucks, the 9-5 is redundant, and no one can remember the last time they were creative... I'm a big believer in the power of creativity. I think human beings were put here to CREATE shit. My bestie just chucked the guest bed in her basement to make a "lady cave" after noticing how creatively unfulfilled she felt. I was recently...
