The antidote to a "work trumps all" life

Food, water, shelter, sleep...
& *creativity*? 🤔

Why isn't creativity considered essential to survival?

So many people are unhappy these days. The daily grind sucks, the 9-5 is redundant, and no one can remember the last time they were creative...

I'm a big believer in the power of creativity. I think human beings were put here to CREATE shit.

My bestie just chucked the guest bed in her basement to make a "lady cave" after noticing how creatively unfulfilled she felt.

I was recently introduced to the idea of "following your curiosity"

As the famous Elizabeth Gilbert quote goes: "If you can let go of your passion and follow your curiosity, your curiosity just might lead you to your passion."

For us freelancers, this is the equivalent of striking a balance between PLAN + WORK + MAKE MONEY

... and just going where the wind takes you.

The other day I had NO DESIRE to work on my task list. ZERO. All I wanted to do was make a video for my band...

It's times like these that I *love ClickUp* an unhealthy amount

It has given me the TOOLS to rework my plan to add in ✨moments of inspiration✨

So instead of beating myself up about procrastinating.

Instead of feeling stressed about falling behind.

Instead of putting my curiosity on the back-burner.

I just slotted it into my day.

So the THING I felt called to make got done, AND all of my other tasks did too.

This stuff isn't complex, Reader.

It's so simple, it's actually kinda suspect... but I know so few freelancers have a system like this to support them, so even something small as this can throw a huge kink in the day or even the week.

Even if that's just *negative energy* 😵‍💫

I'm at a place in life where I don't want to feel negatively about anything. I want to enjoy every moment. This life is too fucking short and it could all end tomorrow.

So these little tricks have worked for me in ways I can't even fully describe.

I'm not the person I was just a few years ago, grappling with daily overwhelm, working late hours, feeling completely drained every single day.

For your viewing pleasure: here's a little walkthrough of how ClickUp makes this happen

I would love it if you'd Hit reply and say "“Hey Robyn, I want to try _____” bc I know you got at least one thing that's piqued your curiosity in the last little while.

The workshop I'm hosting at 2pm ET today is where I let my curiosity take me.

Which BTW, it's not too late to join and/or grab the reply:

Rejection is a real "B" with an itch Waving at someone who doesn't wave back... the worst. Posting on LinkedIn to crickets? Hold me, please. Singing songs on a stage in front of hundreds, for 1 of 5 chances to play at a massive folk festival in Ontario–and not making it? It took me a solid week to like music again. Remember that email I sent last week about sensing a client's about to fire you? Well, it happened. "Due to some shifting priorities, we are bringing on a new paid advertising...

What to do when there's nothing you can do 🥲 You have a great retainer. You don’t want to lose it. But the account has been… challenging. Not because there’s too much to do. The opposite, actually. I’ve been working with this client for—pause while I realize the one-year mark was last month and I completely missed it. 🫠 And for basically the entire time, I’ve been desperately trying to crack the code of working together. One of the hardest parts about being a freelancer? You’re always on the...

Getting paid to *sit in a chair* is modern-day torture 🫠 One of the weirdest parts about being your own boss... is undoing the 9-5 conditioning. My first "real job" as a uni student was in the office at the Quaker Oats factory my dad worked at. I would wear the button-up shirts and black dress pants, traipse over the aluminum walkway into the plant, and log on to my Windows 95 desktop computer every SINGLE Monday to Friday. ... And have literally NOTHING to do. This was clearly one of those...
