On being a *sickie* freelancer šŸ¤’

My 3-year-old niece loves FaceTiming me just to announce, ā€œAuntie Robyn... I’m sick.ā€

And after spending the weekend with her, guess what? Now I’m sick. Should I call her up to let her know?

Being self-employed when you’re sick is both the best and the worst:

The Best bc you can shift deadlines, move meetings, and take a day off without needing a doctor’s note.

The Worst bc the to-do list still piles up, and you might feel like your entire week is going to hell.

That’s usually when mistakes happen: I’m tired, foggy, and working from bed, but still trying to keep things afloat.

On a good day I'm relying on shortcuts to save me from the chaos 🫠

Can we just give a round of applause for CMD+Z? That little buddy has saved my butt more times than I can count.

But sometimes, the undo gods don’t show up.

You frantically hit undo… and nothing. The dreaded ā€œOops, that’s gone foreverā€ moment.

If you’re working in a ClickUp Doc and you accidentally delete a chunk of text only to find undo isn’t doing its thing, you can access the version history to restore what you lost.

AKA no meltdown required.

I recorded a quick screen share showing you:

  1. Where to find Doc version history in ClickUp.

  2. A sneaky trick for accessing your Docs without navigating to where its located.

That’s my pro-tip for when your brain is functioning at 20%. šŸ™ƒ

Because we can’t always count on the undo gods, but we can count on a solid backup plan.

(And maybe a little niece who shares her colds as lovingly as her cuddles.)

Rejection is a real "B" with an itch Waving at someone who doesn't wave back... the worst. Posting on LinkedIn to crickets? Hold me, please. Singing songs on a stage in front of hundreds, for 1 of 5 chances to play at a massive folk festival in Ontario–and not making it? It took me a solid week to like music again. Remember that email I sent last week about sensing a client's about to fire you? Well, it happened. "Due to some shifting priorities, we are bringing on a new paid advertising...

What to do when there's nothing you can do 🄲 You have a great retainer. You don’t want to lose it. But the account has been… challenging. Not because there’s too much to do. The opposite, actually. I’ve been working with this client for—pause while I realize the one-year mark was last month and I completely missed it. 🫠 And for basically the entire time, I’ve been desperately trying to crack the code of working together. One of the hardest parts about being a freelancer? You’re always on the...

Getting paid to *sit in a chair* is modern-day torture 🫠 One of the weirdest parts about being your own boss... is undoing the 9-5 conditioning. My first "real job" as a uni student was in the office at the Quaker Oats factory my dad worked at. I would wear the button-up shirts and black dress pants, traipse over the aluminum walkway into the plant, and log on to my Windows 95 desktop computer every SINGLE Monday to Friday. ... And have literally NOTHING to do. This was clearly one of those...
